The story — in my words
I wrote this during a particularly cold winter when I was thinking about the spaces between people—especially the ones we can't cross. I was sitting on my own porch, watching the rain hit the wood, and I started imagining someone standing outside a door, clutching a letter they’d never have the courage to read aloud. It’s that devastating realization that the time for truth has run out. When we cut this in the studio, I wanted the atmosphere to feel as thin and cold as that midnight air I mentioned in the first line. I kept the arrangement sparse because I wanted the listener to feel that draft in the hallway and the weight of that brass handle. It’s a song for anyone who has ever arrived just a second too late.
