I wrote this track during a period where I felt like the weight of my family history was finally catching up to me. I was thinking about the concept of 'the shield'—not just as a defense, but as a promise to those who come after us. We cut this in a small studio late at night, and I remember telling the band that I wanted the chorus to feel like a wall of light breaking through a cold room. It is a song about the moment you decide to stop carrying the grief of the past and start carrying the fire of the future instead. I really wanted to capture that specific feeling of being the one who finally stands up to say the cycle ends here.
