The story — in my words
I wrote this song while sitting by a creek in the Smokies, watching the water churn over ancient moss. For years, I’d been writing about the 'peaks'—reaching for high ambitions and lofty stars—but I realized I was exhausted. I was shivering, both literally and figuratively. 'Drag Me to Hell' isn't about damnation; it’s about a voluntary descent into the heavy, grounded reality of the earth. I wanted to capture that tactile feeling of cold cedar bark and the weight of a copper coin. We recorded the vocals with a lot of space to let that valley fog seep in. It’s my way of saying that sometimes the dark silt at the bottom of a river is a much safer place to sleep than a lonely mountain top.
