The story — in my words
I wrote this one while thinking about my own family’s roots and those tall tales that somehow make the hardest years sound like a grand adventure. I wanted to capture that specific sound of a rattling Model A Ford bouncing over a washboard road—the kind of vibration you feel in your teeth. When I was writing the lines about the wet flower sacks on the windows, I was picturing my grandma trying to trick the air into smelling like rain when everything outside was parched and brown. It’s not a sad song, though; I wanted it to feel like a victory lap. We cut this track to feel like a conversation with a younger generation, turning that old red dirt grit into something sweet, like a picnic song shared under a hot August sun.
