The story — in my words

I wrote this song at a time when I felt like every bridge I’d built was smoldering behind me. I was sitting in my living room looking at my own reflection, thinking about how we try so hard to hide our mistakes when they are actually the only things that prove we’ve been living. I wanted to capture that raw, abrasive moment when you realize that redemption isn't something handed to you on a silver platter—it's something you have to claw out of the dirt. We tracked the vocals when I was feeling particularly weathered, and I think you can hear that grit in the take. It’s a tribute to the human spirit’s refusal to stay down, even when the fire is hot enough to melt your resolve.
