The story — in my words

I wrote this for a woman I knew who lived one of the hardest lives I’ve ever witnessed, yet she stayed the most generous spirit in the room. We cut this in the studio trying to capture that contrast—the bruises on her heart versus the fire in her eyes. I was thinking a lot about the idea of 'soul contracts' and how some people aren't meant to stay long because they’ve already learned what we’re all still trying to figure out. She lived with literal pennies in her pocket, sleeping in her car, but she’d give you the coat off her back. This song was my way of letting her go while acknowledging that she wasn’t just passing away; she was finally being promoted to where she belonged.
