by J. Michaels
The story — in my words
I wrote this during a time when my own ego felt like a physical weight, a literal crown of blindness that kept me from seeing the people I loved clearly. I was sitting by a creek in the early morning, watching the way the water just takes whatever you give it without judgment. We recorded this in a single take to capture that raw, breathless feeling of a man finally dropping his defenses. The 'bitter pastor' line came from my own struggles with organized religion and the realization that grace doesn't always live inside four walls—sometimes it’s waiting for you in the muddy current of a river. I wanted the song to start in the shadows and end in a shout of pure, unfiltered relief.
