The story — in my words
I wrote this song after walking through the city one afternoon and seeing a man holding a cardboard sign while wearing an old, faded army jacket with a purple heart pinned to it. It hit me like a ton of bricks how we can cheer for the parades but look the other way when the battle follows our soldiers home to our own streets. Dealing with that disconnect was heavy. I wanted the music to feel as urgent as a call to action, but with the grit of a man who hasn't had a roof over his head in years. We tracked the vocals in one take because I didn't want it to be perfect; I wanted it to be honest. It is my way of saying we owe them more than just a thank you; we owe them a way back into the light.
