The ants go marching one by one ©
by J. Michaels
The story — in my words
I wrote this song on a dusty back porch after a long, restless season of chasing horizons that never quite satisfied me. I was sitting there, feeling a bit like a ghost who had finally decided to show up, when I noticed a line of ants working away at a spill from a peach pie. There was something so steady and honest about their rhythm—no ego, just work and sweetness. It hit me that I’d spent too much time wandering west and not enough time just marching in step with the person who stayed. We cut this track live to capture that raw, stomping energy, wanting it to feel like a celebration of finally being ‘right on time’ for the people we love. It’s a song about realizing that planting roots isn't a cage, it’s a rhythm.
