The story — in my words
I wrote this song thinking about a house I lived in that didn't belong to us anymore, and that panic of realizing you can't pack up the parts of a building that actually hold your history. I was focused on that specific image of the door frame where my mother used to mark our heights every birthday. When we cut this in the studio, I wanted it to feel like those quiet minutes after the boxes are all taped up and the rooms are echoing. It’s about the difference between real estate and a home. We couldn't take the wood with us, but seeing my mom trace those pencil marks onto a scrap of paper so we could bring them to the next apartment—that’s where the song really lives for me.
