The story — in my words

I wrote this one after spending an afternoon thinking about the cold, clinical nature of loss. It’s not just about the battlefield; it’s about the ink and paper, the magistrates and clerks who treat human lives like lines in a ledger. I wanted to capture that contrast between the warm mahogany of a government office and the bitter wind hitting the widow outside. We cut the track with a very sparse arrangement because I wanted you to hear the slap of that rope against the flagpole and the heavy thud of the gavel. It’s my way of asking what all that paperwork is actually worth when a lunch pail stays sitting on a bench forever. This song is for the people who are left holding the telegram.
